Captain Tyler Turner: A Journey of Resilience and Adaptation

Captain Tyler Turner’s story is one of perseverance and dedication. Growing up in Depoe Bay, Tyler learned the ropes from his father, Capt. Jeurgen “J.T.” Turner, but his path to captaining his own boat took an unexpected turn in 2008. A motorcycle accident left him with a T4 spinal cord injury, forcing him to rethink how he would achieve his lifelong dream. Despite the challenges, Tyler’s determination saw him through years of rehabilitation, and by 2013, he had earned his merchant mariner master license.

Overcoming Obstacles and Earning His License

Tyler’s journey to becoming a licensed captain was far from easy. After his accident, he dedicated five years to intense rehabilitation, mastering his knee-ankle-foot orthotic braces and learning how to navigate life as a paraplegic. Convincing the Coast Guard to grant him a license took over two years of appeals, but Tyler’s unwavering resolve ultimately led to success. In 2013, he proudly earned his merchant mariner master license, proving that no obstacle was too great.

A Day in the Life of Captain Turner

Today, Captain Turner spends most of his time on the water, leading fishing expeditions that often last between six to twelve hours. His day begins early, with a meticulous routine to prepare for the challenges ahead. Despite his disability, Tyler stands for much of the day, overseeing the operations from the bridge. His dedication to his craft is evident in every aspect of his work, from dropping crab pots to navigating the open seas.

Balancing Work and Family Life

When he’s not on the water, Tyler plays an active role in managing the family’s charter service. He also cherishes time with his two young daughters, balancing his demanding career with family responsibilities. Tyler’s ability to adapt and thrive in both his professional and personal life serves as an inspiration to all of us at Access Northwest.

Taking wheelchair users out on the water is something I truly enjoy because it allows me to share the experience of escaping into the open sea, where, for a few hours, you can leave your worries behind.
